Have you seen the movie Knight's Tale? That really cool 70's themed movie about a common thatcher becoming a knight? With Heath Ledger? Oh, okay. So I say Heath Ledger and you instantly know what I'm talking about. Of course.
The Lord brought back to my mind a scene from that movie. Yes, the Lord will use a movie to speak to your heart (I'm a visual learner – He made me that way – and this is how He communicates with me).
Anyway, the scene plays out like this: Will (Heath Ledger) is about to be arrested for falsifying his records that show he is of noble blood and therefore eligible to compete in the jousting tourneys as a knight. All of his dearest friends, upon hearing that he is about to be arrested, beg of him to run. Even the woman he loves, Jocelyn, says "I love you. There is nothing else to do. Run and I will run with you." Will shouts his reply, "I CANNOT RUN!".
I don't know about you, but my life has been a difficult journey thus far. But, I've not yet quit. I've not yet given up. I've not yet given in. I will not start today. I cannot run.
No matter how hard this journey becomes, no matter what obstacles are still ahead, I cannot run. You see, I've been in this too long. I've invested my time, my money, my fears, my future, my tears, and my faith into what God has put in me. I cannot run.
Look at Hebrews 12.1, 3 "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."
We are to have this mind of a warrior – to run our race, to run into the battle, never to run from it.
Most of us have heard of Job. He lost everything, his wealth, his children, his health. And, much like William Thatcher, his best friends and even his wife tried to convince him that his God had cursed him or, at the very least, forgotten him. Job's reply was simply "I know that my Redeemer lives".
Look in Ephesians chapter 6. The armor of God is crafted for a full frontal attack. We've been given nothing to cover our backsides. Retreating is not an option. We cannot run.
Paul says in Philippians 3.12-14 "Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." We cannot run. Not from the fight. No matter how outnumbered we feel or if defeat seems like our only option. We cannot run.
No matter if we feel inadequate to fulfill the call. No matter if we feel lost at how to do what God has told us. No matter if people reject us, laugh at us, or leave us. No matter what, we cannot run.
Will you be a warrior?
